An Apostille is the name for a special certificate, issued by the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) in India, which is attached to the original document to confirm it is legal and genuine, that will be accepted in one of the 105 member states of the Hague Convention of October 5 1961 where it is no longer required to legitimise foreign public documents.
Apostille is carried out for personal documents such as certificates of birth, marriage and death, Power of Attorney, and Affidavits, among others and documents of education such as matriculation, secondary level, degree or diploma and other relevant certificates. Any document Apostilled in one member country will be acceptable in all the other 104 member- states, in order to simplify the process of attestation by making it unnecessary to get the documents attested in every or for all of the countries individually.
Normal attestation is required for the countries, which are not a member of Hague Convention, and where there is no need for Apostille.
